Cocoa Bubble Milk Tea

Here’s a recipe for homemade Cocoa Bubble Milk Tea (also known as Cocoa Boba Milk Tea), which combines the rich flavor of cocoa with the fun texture of tapioca pearls:

Ingredients

For the Tapioca Pearls (Boba):

  • 1/2 cup black tapioca pearls
  • 4 cups water
  • 2-3 tbsp brown sugar or honey (optional, for soaking the cooked pearls)

For the Cocoa Milk Tea:

  • 2 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 tbsp hot water (for dissolving the cocoa powder)
  • 1-2 tbsp sugar (adjust to taste)
  • 1 cup brewed black tea (cooled)
  • 1 cup milk (whole, skim, or plant-based)
  • Ice cubes

Instructions

1. Cook the Tapioca Pearls:

  1. Bring 4 cups of water to a boil in a large pot.
  2. Add the tapioca pearls to the boiling water and stir gently to prevent sticking.
  3. Cook the tapioca pearls according to the package instructions, usually about 5-7 minutes, until they are soft and chewy.
  4. Once cooked, drain the pearls and rinse them with cold water.
  5. (Optional) To sweeten the pearls, mix them with 2-3 tablespoons of brown sugar or honey while they are still warm and let them soak for 10 minutes.

2. Prepare the Cocoa Mixture:

  1. In a small bowl, mix the unsweetened cocoa powder with 2 tablespoons of hot water to form a smooth paste.
  2. Add the sugar to the cocoa paste and mix until dissolved.

3. Assemble the Cocoa Milk Tea:

  1. In a glass, combine the cooled brewed black tea with the cocoa mixture, stirring well to ensure the cocoa and sugar are fully dissolved.
  2. Add the milk to the tea mixture and stir to combine.
  3. Add ice cubes to the glass to chill the drink.

4. Add the Tapioca Pearls:

  1. Spoon the cooked tapioca pearls into the bottom of a tall glass or a bubble tea cup.
  2. Pour the cocoa milk tea over the tapioca pearls.

5. Serve:

  1. Stir gently to combine the tapioca pearls with the cocoa milk tea.
  2. Serve with a wide straw suitable for drinking bubble tea.
