Ingredients
For the Tapioca Pearls (Boba):
- 1/2 cup black tapioca pearls
- 4 cups water
- 2-3 tbsp brown sugar or honey (optional, for soaking the cooked pearls)
For the Cocoa Milk Tea:
- 2 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder
- 2 tbsp hot water (for dissolving the cocoa powder)
- 1-2 tbsp sugar (adjust to taste)
- 1 cup brewed black tea (cooled)
- 1 cup milk (whole, skim, or plant-based)
- Ice cubes
Instructions
1. Cook the Tapioca Pearls:
- Bring 4 cups of water to a boil in a large pot.
- Add the tapioca pearls to the boiling water and stir gently to prevent sticking.
- Cook the tapioca pearls according to the package instructions, usually about 5-7 minutes, until they are soft and chewy.
- Once cooked, drain the pearls and rinse them with cold water.
- (Optional) To sweeten the pearls, mix them with 2-3 tablespoons of brown sugar or honey while they are still warm and let them soak for 10 minutes.
2. Prepare the Cocoa Mixture:
- In a small bowl, mix the unsweetened cocoa powder with 2 tablespoons of hot water to form a smooth paste.
- Add the sugar to the cocoa paste and mix until dissolved.
3. Assemble the Cocoa Milk Tea:
- In a glass, combine the cooled brewed black tea with the cocoa mixture, stirring well to ensure the cocoa and sugar are fully dissolved.
- Add the milk to the tea mixture and stir to combine.
- Add ice cubes to the glass to chill the drink.
4. Add the Tapioca Pearls:
- Spoon the cooked tapioca pearls into the bottom of a tall glass or a bubble tea cup.
